Some nice grayling caught on Sunday, most to a Grayling Slayer. Microlite GT 10' 4 weight is incredibly versatile for dry fly or various nymphing methods.
I’ve been using this rod for about a month & have been very impressed with its performance. Here is a list of what I like about it:
• It has a crisp but progressive action that does several things. It effectively casts a wide range of line weights from a 0.55mm diameter micronymph line to a 4 weight. It is forgiving enough to give good protection to light tippets (0.10mm/7x)
• The stand-off single leg rings hold the wet line off the blank which improves casting distance
• The matt black finish helps to reduce the risk of spooking fish
• The super-slim quality cork handle is very comfortable & not excessively long
• The high quality down-locking reel seat & light-weight blank & fittings help with the rod balance when Euronymphing
In my opinion this is not a rod for bullying big fish whilst using heavy tippets, or for fishing big streamers. It is also not a rod for casting huge distances, but it is capable of casting just a 20’ leader in calm conditions, whilst performing well at all normal casting distances. It is a rod for finesse-fishing, perfect for dry fly work with 5x to 8x tippets & for Euronymphing. So far I have landed wild brown trout up to 3lb 7oz with it & this rod bends right down to the butt whilst playing these big fish, absorbing all of their plunges & surges.
Just a very brief line to say how pleased I am with the 4 weight rod. Took it to my favourite local water (the river Blau in Arnegg) to try it out. The river has become really choked with weed over the summer. Quickly hooked a 4 pound rainbow, which would have normally been a bit of a challenge with so much weed about. The extra power of the 4 weight dealt really effectively with it though. The shock absorption of the tip is excellent when battling a powerful fish. You could use this rod all day without getting tired. Was well impressed.
When I got my first Sunray rod, the JL nymphing rod, it was the best rod I had ever used…until…Tom introduced the Volition 10' #2, which quickly became the best rod I had ever used. Or at least it was until Tom introduced the Microlite 10' #2, which was quite definitely the best rod I had ever used.
I now have the brand-new 10' #2 Microlite GT and here are my initial thoughts on the new rod.
First, moving the reel holder to the bottom of the but section makes a huge difference to the balance. With a fully loaded Sunray Atom reel attached, the new seating position for the reel brings the pivot point for the rod to exactly where my thumb sits on the grip. The balance is perfect.
Second, changing to a five-section rod also seems to add a lot. In combination with the pivot point moving into the handle, the rod’s action is stunning. It positively fizzes with energy that transfers efficiently to produce effortless and precise casting. I am really very, very impressed and, while Tom is clearly on a journey of continual incremental improvement, I simply cannot imagine how this one can possible be improved.
According to the Sunray website the ‘GT’ designation stands for Grand Tour. But in my mind, it clearly stands for ‘Go To’ because this is quite definitely my new go to rod. It is quite definitely the best rod I have ever used!

Wow Dave. What a great review. Thank you so much. This has really made our day and Tom is delighted too. Thanks again from Team Sunray.
