I use a 10' #2 Microlite fly rod on the River Hodder at The Inn at Whitewell. Then, switch to Stocks Reservoir to catch rainbow trout using the same rod. You don't need stiff rods and thick fly lines for stillwaters.

"I can, today, can manipulate shape, specifically the rear taper and 'high point' of a line to change the perception of weight, more than the actual weight of a line. So, the diameter and changing nature of where those diameter changes are have more of an effect on fly rod load than weight alone."

I use a cane / bamboo fly rod to catch carp. It's a very light line 8' #4 fly rod built by Rawson in UK. I am using a Short Head #4 fly line by Sunray and a single deer hair fly.
