Our goal was to make a 7 weight that felt like a 6 or even a 5 weight to cast.

The rod had to be schizophrenic. It needed to be a 5 weight one day and an 8 weight another day. Sometimes in the same day. We broke it down. The goals:

    • No hingeing between the mid and tip section
    • Bend into the handle
    • Load very short and become a 5 weight when needed
    • Cast very long distances with streamers when needed
    • Feel like a parabolic full flex rod
    • Cast into Argentinian winds (this was just for Tom!)
    • Generate very high line speed
    • Handle sinking lines, long heads and distance casting strokes

    Stats

    • Weight : 116g
    • 4 piece unground natural carbon blank
    • K series anti friction strippers
    • Balanced full flex action
    • Hard anodised saltwater resistant reel seat with anti jam threads.
    • Alignment dots
    • Aluminium tube

    Lines

For larger fliesuse the Short Head. It has a compact head for punching out flies into a wind.

If you need extreme distance combined with fine control, then use the Long Head. Designed for smaller lures, bushy dries, plume tips, buzzers & nymphs. The 49' head feels like casting a 35' head because of the lack of friction on the coating. Friction is the number 1 killer of fly casting perfection in our sport.

If you want to fish lures / streamers & pike flies deep in lakes or rivers, use the El Guapo Streamer.  It's designed for firing streamers from drifting boats & quick fire lure fishing on stillwaters. It will load as short as 5' and fire another 40' out in 1 false cast. It's a rocket but it doesn't land heavy. We make float, float / inter, inter / s2 / s4.

    Leaders

Use Straight 'n' Soft tapered leaders. They are the only leaders on the market that don't coil. They aren't shiny and they lay dead straight. They are a dull matt grey colour at the butt section and clear at the front.

    Stillwater buzzer setup

    18' total leader length consisting of;

    Onto the end of the tapered leader tie;

    • a 7" dropper
    • 5' down to the middle dropper
    • a 7" dropper
    • 4' down to point
    • Water knot for droppers
    Flies
    • Top dropper fly : sz 16 Shipmans buzzer
    • Middle dropper : sz 14  diawl bach
    • Point fly : sz 16 bloodworm
Use Hybrid for droppers. Designed for World competitors, it's fluorocarbon coated nylon that doesn't get weaker when wet. Wet knot strength is the variable competitors look for. It's very easy to tie unlike fluorocarbon.

    Coastal Sea Trout

    • Long Head #7 density compensated intermediate 2ips
    • Grinner knot to fly line welded loop
    9' total leader length consisting of;
    • 9' 0X Straight 'n' soft tapered leader
    Flies
    • sz 10 Ythan Terror

    Customer's experience

    - I've been fishing with the Volition 10' 7wt for a couple of months now and I have to say it has been a fantastic rod for trout fishing out of a boat. It feels like a proper 7 weight with lots of power in the bottom half of the rod, which is great for longer casts and pulling stubborn fish up from the bottom. But the thing bends sweetly in the top half, giving great feedback and cushioning to protect your tippet.

I sometimes hear fellow fishermen talk about using progressively using lighter and lighter rods to do the same things they used to do, like there's some kind of honour in catching the same fish in the same way on a lighter rod. Some of this has to do with the fact that rods have gotten stiffer and stiffer over the years (your old 6 weight is now re-badged as your new 4 weight, etc.), but some of it is just about a strange pissing contest about outdoing your fellow angler. What a waste of time...

This 10' 7wt is exactly what you want to be using when you're throwing large streamers, teams of wets and heavy nymphs for trout. It's the right tool for the job. Of course you can do those things with a lighter rod and the right line, but why make things harder than they have to be? This rod has the back bone to handle that kind of fishing with ease. I'm sure it will be great fun for light saltwater use over the summer too.

Overall I'm very impressed with the feel and the quality of this rod. I would highly recommend it for anyone looking for a powerful, yet sensitive fly rod for trout or light saltwater use.

    Impressive first outing

Received my rod and short head line and had my first outing at my local water. The rod is as light as a feather and a joy to wield. I can now roll cast properly which was something that always seemed to escape me and with only a couple false casts I am getting the line out further with better presentation. Was lucky enough to hook into a fish that took me to the backing three times and the rod handled the subsequent work out admirably.

    Volition’s Alaskan introduction

Couldn’t be happier with the way the 7 wt. handled rainbows and char in Alaska.

Great rod for a hard day on a boat!

Pictured after a hard day on Stocks Reservoir UK with all kinds of weather, paired up with competition sink tip line from Sunray and the intermediate. I’m not the best caster but with this rod, line and some help from Tom I am fishing better and more confidently than before; even managed to bag a couple of fish on a very tough day. As other reviews have said you don’t end up with a sore arm despite casting all day. I have purchased a lot of gear over the last 8 years a lot of which doesn’t meet the hype; Sunray is genuine innovation and the products do what they say on the tin! Love it!

    Very Impressed

I decided to pick up the volition 7 weight after seeing Tom's video on youtube stating he believed this was the best 7 weight rod potentially on the planet. I have been on a quest to find a perfect 7 weight rod for the past two years....I have tried and sold them all...Greys gr70, sage x , hardy zepherus, airflo airlite v2, orvis recon and many other cheaper rods trying to find that elusive 10 foot 7 weight rod that I am happy with.

Essentially most rods I have tried end up hurting your wrist as they are all so bloody fast so you have to get a fair amount of line speed going to get the most out of the rod. But in honesty I have never found them fun to use...

There is a real fine balance between having a rod which casts like a cannon into the wind but can also be fun to catch a 2lb stockie rainbow on. I was never able to find that rod until now....

The volition is everything that Tom says it is....it's a bloody fun rod to fish....light as a feather and the rod bends so its still a ton of fun to play a fish on. I went to a local still water this past weekend and it was blowing a hooley (22+mph) and paired with the artic silver 7wt line I was able to get my fly out to the fish with very little effort and after 4-5 hours fishing I had very little arm or back fatigue to content with.

This was awesome and in my humble view the sunray volition is the dogs bollox and an amazing fly rod

I'm thinking about picking up the EL GUAPO or the short head fly line to really make wind casting even easier.

I'm well impressed finally after trying about 10 different rods I have found something that gets a thumbs up from me

    Cheers
